Mobil 1 Official Motor Oil of Road Trips Badge

As summer gets closer, you may be getting your car ready for a road trip with the family. To help you get on the road smoothly, we’ve teamed up with Mobil 1™ to bring you tips on how to change your own motor oil and get your car ready for a summer road trip.

You can pick up several supplies at Costco to get your car prepped for summer, including Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic motor oil. Now’s a great time to buy as six packs of 1-quart bottles are $10 off through July 25!

Mobil 1 is the #1 selling motor oil in America at retail* and the official motor oil of road trips. Not only that, Mobil 1 can give peace of mind for the road ahead with a guarantee that the lubricant will last for one year or 10,000 miles between oil changes**. With seven different synthetic variations available at Costco, there’s a Mobil 1 option available to suit just about every car make, type, and age.

DID YOU KNOW? Changing your own oil is cheaper and often quicker than taking it to the shop. If you’re new to the process, here are some quick tips as well as a video to help you out!

If you’re new to the process, here are some quick tips:

  1. You’ll need a few things for this job, and it’s best to get everything together before getting under your car. Aside from the motor oil, you’ll need an oil pan, ratchet, a socket set, a new filter, a funnel, goggles, and gloves. Check out the video for a full list of tools you’ll need.
  2. Pop up your car. If you have a car jack, that’s the best option, but another easy solution is to use angled wood blocks or ramps and drive up onto them. Make sure you backstop your car with a couple bricks or a 2×4 to prevent it from rolling.
  3. Drain the oil. Get under your car with your oil pan, ratchet, and socket set. Find the drain plug, open it with the ratchet and let the oil drain into your oil pan. Pro tip: some cars hide the drain plug behind a cover.
  4. Loosen the filter. More oil will flow out, let it finish then remove it completely. If your filter is in a housing, toss that out and give the remaining unit a good wipe down.
  5. Reinstall the drain plug. Tighten until it’s snug but don’t go overboard. Then replace the filter and screw that back in as well. A light coating of oil and a new O-ring are a good idea if you have those handy.
  6. Refill the oil. Open up your hood, remove the oil cap and fill the engine with a funnel.
  7. Check the oil. After letting things settle for a few minutes, make sure that your oil level is correct using the dipstick. From there, turn your car on and verify that nothing is leaking out the bottom.

Give it a try—it’s honestly less intimidating than it seems, and your car will thank you later.
