New Coupon Book, Renewal And Refund Email Program

A brand new program is being introduced by Costco where they will now email you your coupon books, yearly renewal forms, and executive membership refund, among other things. It is part of their go green initiative, saving a lot of paper in the process. They will not entirely discontinue coupon books; the electronic version will be on a voluntary basis. You can also unsubscribe from the email list at any time, and you will then resume receiving paper coupon books. This should be a nationwide campaign, but I have seen it pushed at some Costcos while others are not promoting it. Usually while you’re standing in line, or when you first walk in an employee may ask you if you’d like to sign up for the new program.

To get an idea of how much money Costco would save, they are also considering going paperless with their payroll. From what I understand, if they did not give paper checks to all the employees currently on direct deposit (which they are considering) the company would save $1 million a year. That makes sense taking into account that they have roughly 150,000 employees and 26 pay checks per year. So, considering there are at least 33 million households with a membership, not mailing coupon books to all of them could be quite a cost saver, and environment saver. What do you think, would you prefer coupon books by mail?

I hate to say, and be un-PC, but I enjoy flipping through the coupon book that comes in the mail.

I think the book or an email book would be of interest to me, but I hate that you need a coupon when shopping! As a paying member of a shopping club I feel Costco should just give the special offer to all of us shoppers in their stores, no coupon needed! You forget the booklet, you are with a friend shopping, it is just a hassle. Just show it on the endcap where they have the items and they will sell more. It seems each store has a differnt policy also..some scan the coupon book others make you tear it out..so silly.I am not a coupon fan, just want the deal and pay $100 a yr for it 🙂

Even if Costco e-mails the coupons, the customer has to print them on their own paper to bring to the store, still wasting paper and ink.

Another idea might be that Costco could e-mail the customers the coupons, and then we could pick up the coupon book in the store. This would save Costco considerable postage, while not annoying customers with having to waste time, paper and ink printing out their own coupons.

Mike, thanks for the comment. I think there’s the chance you would no longer have to bring coupons into the store, or that you could maybe “load” them onto your membership card, kind of like Safeway does it. We will see.

Tell the cashier that you get the electronic coupon books and they will scan the master coupon which will automatically take the discounts off on all items that have coupons.

The coupon books are great; they can be published on line but they are much easier to read when you can hold the booklet and look through it leisurely. I like the idea of having them available at the store for those who like to use the coupons. We are gone during the winter months and our books do not get forwarded anyway.

The The Costco Connection is not something we read so they could save money by not mailing those and having them at the store for those who want to read them.

I think Costco should automatically give the coupon discounts to members, whether they have the coupons in hand or not, just by scanning our membership card.
I know I buy more than I usually do when there’s a discount offered, but keeping track of those little coupons is a bit of a pain.

I think Costco giving coupons for limiting items. For example, some coupon items you can purchase max 5.

    • kaity says:

They told me it’s not automatic because the manufactures of the products don’t like them just giving discounts on their items.

How about emailing the coupons and then the users get a link to “Activate the coupon” for that month. Once a user activates the coupon it is then tied to his membership number and will be used automatically when shopping at Costco the next time. This eliminates the need of keeping the printed coupons at the stores too.

Might be slightly tricky to implement….but that is what we engineers do! 😉

I think an e-version that allows you the option to print ONLY the items you check off as items of interest would be a great compromise & would serve as a of shopping list. They could format it so that it condenses down to a single page. Just a thought!

That would be a great idea! My husband worked for IBM for 23 years and never got a paper check or statement. It helped us to become a more paperless household. We had to purchase a large corporate size shredder to get rid of all the paper in our house that had to be shredded. Let’s save some trees. Most of these coupon books will just go in the trash. So many of us own smart phones — why not give us an app to download the coupons we want to use on our phones and then scan them at the register when we shop. OR have a laminated scannable coupon at each register. There are so many ways to make the transition less painful for us! Let’s all brainstorm and see what we can come up with!

I wouldn’t mind email coupons as long as I don’t have to print them out to use them. At the Culver City Costco, as of the last time I went there, they give the coupon discount automatically at the register whether you have the coupon or not.

    • guest12 says:

to guest. just want to clear this “automatic” thing. the cashiers may have an extra coupon by their register, but at times especially in the opening hour, the cashiers may not have the coupon handie. so i always suggest members to keep at least one coupon with them at all times. they are all Master Coupons so anything you have on coupon will Automatically be discounted after scanning one coupon.

I agree with stripeymeow, and that’s what the membership card is for.
Sometimes we pass by Costco and want to go at the moment, but end up not buying because we don’t necessary have coupon book with us at all times. And also the coupon book’s period is all different every month, it’s really hard to keep track of when it’s coming, or lost in the mail.

Wouldn’t be just so much easier with no worries about any coupon, all we need as members just show up with our card? Save Costco millions for printing and paper, ease members’ shopping experience!

This whole idea of going green at costco should encompass the automatic application and processing of coupons as well. As executive members we all pay a lot for membership and it makes sense that purchasing products at the cash register would link up easily to the coupon. The prices are entered and updated daily. Why not coupons too?
